CocktailBot 4.0 – Networked Robots Cooperate

FZI at "Stallwächterparty" of the Baden-Württemberg State Representation in Berlin for the third time

At this year’s Stallwächerparty in Berlin, the FZI Research Center for Information Technology will present how flexible, robot-supported manufacturing processes in tomorrows’ digital production will look like. The CocktailBot 4.0 consists of five different robots and will be mixing individual beverages upon request. The short production line is equipped with two conveyor bands. The visitors can use a tablet that is equipped with a web-based user interface to order a drink. Depending on the order, the production line is then directly and automatically adjusted to the process. The BarBot Manager coordinates the various orders and defines which robot is responsible for what action and when. The different robots and grippers produced by different manufacturers are controlled, coordinated and synchronised with the ROS-Industrial framework.

Another special feature of CocktailBot 4.0 is the use of a virtual DVS (dynamic vision sensor) camera. The FZI has already used this camera system in the context of neurorobotics and now benefits from its ability to pre-segment moving objects. After that, customised image processing algorithms and filter chains can reliably detect a moving glass on the conveyor band. This enables the robot station to adjust its movements to the moving glasses and thus to realise a flexible production process. By using 3D printing, the FZI and its student assistants were able to design and manifacture specialised gripper brackets and components for the CocktailBot 4.0.

The robot demonstrates how real industry 4.0 applications can be realised rapidly using flexible networked robots, innovative sensor concepts and rapid prototyping. At the same time, due to the web app, it is characterised by its easy and intuitive operability. It does not require any knowledge of the process or the robot technology.

Discover the robot at this year’s Stallwächterparty in Berlin or learn more about it via the FZI’s social media channels – videos and pictures will follow shortly. More information, videos and photos on Facebook and Twitter. Find a detailed video on YouTube.
