Abstract:
Although ontologies already play an important role in today’s knowledge based systems, they are still a scarce resource on the Web. It is an expensive and time consuming enterprise to develop them and most of the publicly available ontologies model only limited domains. During the VICODI project we developed an ontology of European history. History is an overly complex domain which made creating such an ontology difficult. In this paper we report on our lessons learned while we addressed this challenge and discuss some of the consequences of our experiences which may be interesting generally for the knowledge management community.
