Projekt Marie Curie Fellowship - Semantic Web

Marie Curie Fellowship - Semantic Web Center of Excellence

Marie Curie Fellowships support the training and mobility of researchers throughout Europe. This scheme is particularly focused on the provision of post-doctoral level research training. However, there are also opportunities for pre-doctoral level training, as well as for the transfer of expertise via senior researchers. Fellowships can be located in academic and industrial settings in EU Member and Associated States (click here for further information on eligibility criteria). To participate researchers are required to go to another country to carry out their training.

FZI-WIM is a Marie Curie Training Site (MCFH-2001-00435) on Semantic Web technologies that supports short stays (between 3-12 months) by young researchers pursuing doctoral studies, providing them with the possibility of undertaking part of their doctoral studies in a country other than their own, and allowing them the benefit of working within an internationally recognised group in their specialised area of research.

The fellows will be offered a research position in the knowledge management research group WIM to pursue research on Knowledge Management and the Semantic Web. Both the fellows individual background and specific interests and the ongoing research at FZI will eventually determine the subject of research. Previous and ongoing projects of the group such as OntoBroker ,, OntoKnowledge, CONSense, and OntoLogging and the research activities based on them will serve as a starting point. Among the potential subjects are ontology federations and intelligent support for ontology and metadata creation.

Potential research topics that may be adressed by the young researchers are the following (this is a non-exhaustive list):

  • Applying Machine Learning for the Semantic Web, e.g. focused crawling, bootstrapping information extraction systems using semi-supervised learning, semantic web mining,
  • Developing the Semantic Web infrastructure, e.g. reasoning on the Semantic Web based on RDFS and DAML+OIL, ontology engineering and maintenance, ontology mapping and federation of ontologies
  • Semantic Web Applications: Knowledge Portals, Virtual Organisations, Knowledge Management, Semantic-Driven Multimedia Presentations, ...
