Abstract:
We propose a simple formal ontology model for the uniform presentation of ontologies across different areas of Semantic Web (SW) research. On the one hand, the model's simplicity allows for abstracting from technical details in a selective way, while on the other hand it captures the ssential characteristics of an ontology common to most ontology languages and formalisms. To demonstrate the compatibility of our model to existing SW research, we provide mappings to several languages and formalisations ranging from expressive language standards to light-weight semantical models. Moreover, we specify an extension of the UML metamodel for the graphical visualisation of ontologies, and we sketch a software architecture for the programmatic access to ontologies in terms of an API.
