Born 17.Nov. 1935. Received diploma and doctoral degrees in Electrical Engineering in 1958 and 1963, respectively. Joined the California Institute of Technology from 1963 to 1970 as a Research Fellow and Senior Research Fellow in Information Science. Spent 2 years with GMD Bonn as a senior scientist. Since 1972 Professor of Informatics at the University of Karlsruhe and since 1985 also a director of the Computer Science Research Center at Karlsruhe. His current research interests are in the area of distributed and collaborative data-intensive computer applications. Applications are in areas such as engineering databases, their techniques and applications, in particular for CAD and CAM databases, software engineering databases, traffic databases, design data bases for architects. Technological emphasis is on data mining, constraint evaluation and enforcement strategies and techniques, object-oriented modelling techniques, active databases, interoperable databases, the integration of telecommunications and database technologies, and database-supported network services. He is the author of four textbooks (one on telecommunications and databases) and well over 100 research papers in journals, conference proceedings and books, and an editor of six books. He received numerous research grants from public institutions and private industry. Prof. Lockemann is deeply involved in in developing better mechanisms for close interaction between academic or publicly supported research institutions and private industry. As a director of an extra-academic research institute he is actively involved in the collaboration between industry and public research to transfer the most recent technologies to industrial and commercial use. Prof. Lockemann is a member of the IEEE Computer Society, the Association for Computing Machinery and the German Computer Society. He was a National Representative to IFIP TC8 on Information Systems. From 1981 to 1997 he was a trustee of VLDB Endowment, Inc. and served as its Secretary from 1989 to 1993 and as its President from 1993 to 1997. He serves on the supervisory boards and in working groups of national and international scientific organizations, industrial institutions and governmental committees. |
