Werdegang

FZI director Hartmut Schmeck considers the design of dependable as well as self-organizing, adaptive systems as the major challenge of his research.

At the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) he is a Full Professor at the Institute for Applied Informatics and Formal Description Methods (AIFB). His research focusses on the design of methods for the efficient utilization of modern computing infrastructures for planning, improvement, and execution of information processing in business and industry. From 2005 to 2011 he was the coordinator of the DFG priority program 1183 “Organic Computing”. Furthermore, he has been the spokesperson of the KIT focus COMMputation (2007-2013) and the KIT center “Information • Systems • Technologies” (2013-2016).

As a principal investigator in several projects within various funding programs Hartmut Schmeck drives the development of intelligent systems in future energy systems and for electric mobility, shaping the new discipline of Energy Informatics. From 2012 to 2015 he was also Head of the Institute for Applied Computer Science (IAI) of KIT and in 2011 he became a director at FZI. In 2016 he was awarded the Heinrich-Hertz-Prize of the EnBW Foundation for his contributions to the development and utilisation of innovative information and communication technologies in intelligent Energy Management Systems.
