At the joint stand of the international trade fair for photonics components, systems and applications, the FZI researchers present LidarSee.

At the international trade fair LASER World of PHOTONICS from 26 to 29 June 2017 in Munich, leading manufacturers and research institutes will present tailor-made solutions for tomorrow’s interconnected, highly automated world of production.

The FZI researchers will introduce project LidarSee at their stand. In the project, the researchers are developing a LiDAR-based mobility aid for people suffering from significant visual impairments or blindness. LiDAR sensors are very cost-effective and are mostly used in drones or robot vacuum cleaners. The low-cost sensors help the mobility aid to recognise obstacles and to navigate. In combination with inertial sensors, surfaces can be scanned depending on the inclination of the head. The gathered information is then used to create a map, which again serves as a navigational support and to recognise obstacles. For the visually impaired or blind user of the system, the information is presented tactilely via a feedback system.

The idea behind the project has already been awarded in the competition "Light Cares" (photonic technologies for people with impairments) under the funding programme "Photonik Forschung Deutschland" (photonics research Germany) by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Numerous actors at LASER World of Photonics 2017 in Munich will present a broad spectrum of processes: miniaturised metal printing, micro processing for additive manufacturing of glass and other transparent materials, the manufacturing of 3D micro and nano structures from photosensitive materials, or laser melting processes for steel, cobalt-chrome, and precious metals like gold and silver. Not only leading manufacturers and solution providers will present their latest innovations, but also the application panels Laser and Optics in Hall B3 and Industrial Laser Applications in Hall A3, and the scientific conference Lasers in Manufacturing LiM 2017 as part of the WORLD of PHOTONICS Congress as well as about 340 exhibitors will focus on light as a production factor.
