Karlsruhe, 21.03.2019 – This year, fair visitors can inform themselves about the versatile use of applied artificial intelligence (AI) at the booth C47 of the FZI Research Center for Information Technology in hall 2. For the Industry 4.0 environment, the Karlsruhe researchers provide insights into the current research in the field of collaborative robots (cobots). The FZI shows logistics and production companies, via an intelligent Internet of Things solution, possibilities to optimise the supply chain. In the field of mobility, AI enables in mixed-virtual test environments to test autonomous systems in the future more realistically and the walking robot LAURON can also recognise and asses risks as well as independently derive actions. Moreover, research on automated, electric mini buses on the Test Area Autonomous Driving Baden-Württemberg will also be presented as well as the work of the Competence Center for IT Security of the FZI, which raises awareness for IT security in system networks.

In hall 2, booth C47, the FZI will present the following projects and exhibits:

Transportation Digital Twin: Intelligent IoT solution for logistics and production

The FZI shows at Hannover Messe how modern AI processes enable a continuous shipment monitoring, detection and prediction of transport goods. A digital twin of the real transport unit does not only provide insights into the current statuses and processes but also establishes a data basis for precise predictions of, for example the transport time and risks or on the construction of flexible, informative simulation applications. In a combination of the latest research results from the field of image recognition, semantic data integration and real-time data processing, the presented solution combines this in an innovative logistics application. The universally usable open source application StreamPipes, which was developed at the FZI, is being used for flexible data analyses and big data applications, so that the used algorithms can be deployed in a reusable way, which reduces the development costs.

Safe use of artificial intelligence in production

At the booth of the Karlsruhe research institute, force-based, flexible conveyor screwing will be demonstrated. In the industrial assembly, screwing processes are especially being carried out by humans so far or at so-called stop stations. The force-based screw assembly, based on ROS-Industrial, shows how a robust and yet adaptive screw assembly can be implemented, which flexibly adapts to the conveyor speed. In addition, first activities of the project CyberProtect, which is funded by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Housing, will be introduced. An automated robotic screw assembly on a conveyor belt will be presented, which can recognise the screws though an AI system. The used robot is able to move with a component located on the conveyor belt and to drive screws. Furthermore, the effects of an attack on an inadequately secured system as well as opportunities to secure this will be shown.

Risk-conscious robots assess risks independently

In the project “intelliRISK”, the FZI researches on the self-confident use of robots in space missions. The six-legged walking robot LAURON V enables together with an augmented and virtual reality simulation (AR/VR) a so far unprecedented live insight into the internal risk assessment of robots at Hannover Messe. The fair visitors can virtually immerse into an exploration scenario on Mars via virtual reality and interactively experience the risk consciousness of the robot there. The status data of the robot can also be visualised. Through research on mobile robotics in the field of exploration, inspection or civil protection, new opportunities on the independent risk assessment and robot autonomy arise for companies and research institutions.

Electric, interconnected and autonomous mini buses fill the gap in public transport

Together with partners from industry and public transport, the FZI works in the project “EVA-Shuttle” on the use of electric, interconnected and autonomously driving minibuses for the last mile from the bus station to the house. The aim of the research project, awarded with the innovation award NEO2018, is the development of a public transport mobility concept, which should be tested through a system-wide fleet testing under real life conditions on the Test Area Autonomous Driving Baden-Württemberg (TAF BW). At the booth of the FZI, visitors can experience a simulation of an autonomous shuttle in the test quarter, the perception of the environment on an algorithmic level as well as their connection to the intelligent transport infrastructure of the Test Area Autonomous Driving Baden Württemberg.

Intelligent solution for autonomous parking of electric vehicles

One of the first implementations of autonomous driving will be the so-called “Automated Valet Parking”, the independent driverless parking of a vehicle. At Hannover Messe, the FZI will present a mobile sensor platform of the research project “Smart Electric Parking”. The sensor data of a camera and lidar system on the environment of the booth, captured by the mobile sensor platform, will be visualised on a monitor. For the car park of the future, concepts for the “Automated Valet Parking” are being developed, which can be used independently from the manufacturer by vehicles of different automation levels.

KarAMel³: machine learning and its application in practice

The FZI will present at Hannover Messe the Karlsruhe Applied Machine Living Lab (KarAMeL³). This aims to transmit knowledge of the current research field of machine learning and its practical application. With thematically adapted final theses, study-related internships, workshops and at extramural competitions, KarAMel³ offers students opportunities to expand and deepen their practical knowledge in the field of machine learning. In this context, the FZI supports a team of students in the development of autonomous driving functions for the Audi Autonomous Driving Cup (AADC). The exhibit shows one of the model vehicles used at the AADC. A video shows impressions of the competition at which the team won last year.

Testing of highly automated driving functions in virtual and real environments

The Karlsruhe researchers demonstrate how autonomous systems and their interaction with other traffic participants can be tested efficiently and safely with a combined test environment, which interconnects real scenarios with virtual ones. Virtual simulation models can thereby separately be replaced by real behaviour and sensors. Through the developed test methods, it is possible to operate autonomous systems in safe and secure environments, without having to put up with major losses in reality.

Sensitisation for IT security in system networks

In industrial facilities, products of different providers are often interconnected. In such a system network, attention must be paid on the IT security of all components involved. The FZI demonstrates by means of a toy “Furby” with a Bluetooth interface and a smart-home assistant which possible risks of attack in system networks can arise.

In the forum integrated energy, the Department Manager of the FZI Manuel Lösch gives a lecture on “Smart Meter Gateways und Steuerboxen: Grundlage zur breiten Erschließung elektrischer Flexibilität“ (smart meter gateways and control boxes: the basis for the development of electrical flexibility). Smart Meter Gateways (SMGWs) can modify the national grid distribution. In the future, households with an energy consumption of over 6.000 kWh will be equipped with smart meter gateways, a bidirectional communication with power meters and control boxes. Lösch discusses in his lecture the national grid distribution in the past and possible effects of the SMGW rollouts in the future.

PD Dr.-Ing. Ingmar Baumgart presents in the forum “tech transfer” the project “CyberProtect“, in which new methods for more security in production are researched. On the one hand the project focuses on data-driven software in interconnected production environments (Industry 4.0), on the other hand it focuses on new challenges for the use of artificial intelligence in production. Possible security risks are identified, test methods and test tools are designed and new technologies are developed in order to secure software.

The FZI spin-off “Promonode” analyses the effect of reporting on the company’s reputation

The Karlsruhe start-up “Promonode” is a data and analysis company, which examines the reputation of companies, brands and their products by means of artificial intelligence. Through observation, analysis and learning it identifies, categorises and tracks automatically modifications in the perception of the online presence, so that companies can make smart decisions at all times for brand and marketing activities. On April 4, the founder will show at hall 13, booth E21 a product that analyses and evaluates the effect of journalistic reporting on the overall perception of companies. It reveals important factors that are critical for a successful target group marketing and customer loyalty from the medial landscape and internal data.
