Project Examines the Traffic Impact of the Research Project on the Test Area Autonomous Driving Baden-Württemberg

Karlsruhe, 11.02.2019 – Since the launch of the Test Area Autonomous Driving Baden-Württemberg (TAF BW) last May, research projects and consortia use it to provide valuable findings for the development of automated driving under real-life conditions. But which effects have the applications on the Test Area on traffic and technology? How important is a test area, integrated in real-life traffic for society? Which legal questions result from the development of automated driving? The project “bwirkt”, a research initiative launched at the beginning of the year, which examines the accompanying and impact research on automated and interconnected driving on the Baden-Württemberg test area more precisely and derives recommendations for economy, industry and politics from the findings, deals with these topics.

Serving as the coordinator of „bwirkt“, the FZI Research Center for Information Technology takes over the task of developing an evaluation concept for the accompanying and impact research. In addition, the FZI will analyse and evaluate technological, organisational and data protection aspects of the test area. Member of the FZI’s Board of Executive Directors Prof. Dr.-Ing. J. Marius Zöllner explains: “We will derive research and expansion requirements from the resulting findings and bring them as target-group-specific recommendations to public attention.” With the evaluation of the research on the test area, a knowledge transfer towards politics, economy and society is also ensured. For this reason, the FZI holds status seminars together with e-mobil BW, which is part of the project consortia just as the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, with all actors participating in the test area. “The combination of the project partners’ different competences and the projects already on-going on the test area, enable an efficient coordination of the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg’s research activities in the field of autonomous driving,” states Zöllner, who also occupies the role as the spokesman for the test area.

“If in the future, more and more autonomous vehicles are on the road, this will probably have an impact on the traffic behaviour of the people and on traffic itself. We have to estimate this development and be able to react to it,” says Dr. Martin Kagerbauer from the Institute for Transport Studies (lfV), who manages the project on the part of KIT. “For this purpose, we analyse on the basis of the current projects on the test area the consequences of automated and interconnected driving for the traffic demand and flow.” Amongst others, the researchers of the lfV want to find out whether automated driving has an impact on the number of rides and on distances as well as whether the destinations or the choice of the transport means changes. Thereto, they are using the software mobiTopp, developed at the lfV, which can be used to simulate the passenger transport demand. The impacts on traffic flow are analysed by the team, for example by data from sensors of the TAF BW on distance behaviour, capacity and time gaps. Further measurements on the TAF BW are added to that.

“As State Agency for New Mobility Solutions and Automotive Baden-Württemberg, we will accompany together with our research partners the FZI and KIT the TAF BW and the projects in the framework of the research programme smart mobility. In this strong network of our partners from science, economy and the public sector, we can forward one of the central future topics of mobility. However, technology should not be an end in itself. Considering that, we will integrate future users of automated and interconnected mobility solutions at an early stage in “bwirkt”,” says Dr. Wolfgang Fischer, divisional head of projects and cluster activities of the State Agency for New Mobility Solutions and Automotive e-mobil BW GmbH. “In dialogue, the different needs and requirements will be captured and target group- oriented communications formats will be developed.” In the framework of the project, we participate in different work packages and especially take care of the social effect as well as public relations.

The project “Begleit- und Wirkungsforschung zum automatisierten und vernetzten Fahren auf dem Testfeld Autonomes Fahren Baden-Württemberg (TAF BW) mit Schwerpunkt auf verkehrlichen Wirkungen“ (accompanying and impact research on automated and interconnected driving on the Test Area Autonomous Driving Baden-Württemberg (TAF BW) with focus on the traffic impact) – short „bwirkt“ – has a duration of 36 months and ends on December 31, 2021. It is funded by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport with EUR 300.000. The FZI Research Center for Information Technology takes over the management of the research project and works together on the project with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the State Agency for New Mobility Solutions and Automotive e-mobil BW.
