Legally Viable and Efficient Homologation of Autonomous Vehicles: the Research Project VVM Was Launched

When introducing fully automated and autonomous driving functions, the testing and safeguarding of vehicle systems play a key role. Funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, 23 well-known partners from industry and research will jointly develop legally viable as well as time- and cost-efficient verification and validation methods.

Karlsruhe, August 19, 2019 - With probably more than 25 % the validation and testing will constitute a significant share of the value of fully automated and autonomous vehicle technologies. In the foreseeable future, those automotive manufacturers, who master the relevant processes in the framework of legal provisions first, will secure a competitive edge.

AI-based vehicle systems are confronted with an infinite number of possible traffic situations. In the course of the introduction of fully automated and autonomous systems the question rises, how to prove that these can deal with them safely and securely at all times. The example of the complex urban crossroads application shows that VVM develops essential innovations in the interaction of virtual and real-life tests.

The 23 partners from industry and science are respectively entrusted with different tasks in VVM. The FZI Research Center for Information Technology is responsible for the subproject 7 "Testing Procedures" and deals with the holistic testing methodology for level 4 and 5 vehicles. The FZI-Director Professor Eric Sax explains: "Autonomous driving is one of the central innovation drivers for the automotive industry. The safeguarding of autonomous vehicles is the significant aspect for a market launch, I am therefore pleased that we as the FZI together with the entire German automotive industry dedicate ourselves to this topic." A challenge in the verification and validation is the increasing transfer of tests into the simulation as well as the interlinking of simulations and real-life test into a holistic test statement. The project aims at realising a modular argumentation of individual components to the overall system level. Stefan Otten, manager of the subproject 7 and project manager at the FZI adds: "With VVMethods we want to address the challenges for the safeguarding of level 4 and 5 systems especially in the urban environment. The test project "Testing Procedures" plays a central role in order to develop a comprehensive overall methodology for the verification and validation."

The project VVM - Verification and Validation Methods for Level 4 and 5 Automated Vehicles has a project duration of 48 months. It was launched on July 1, 2019 and runs until June 30, 2023. With a total budget of EUR 47 million, 23 partners research on the legally viable and efficient homologation of autonomous vehicles. Apart from the FZI Research Center for Information Technology, the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, OFFIS e.V, RWTH Aachen University, TU Braunschweig as well as TU Darmstadt are involved as research partners in the project. Partners from the (automotive-) industry are automotive manufacturers: BMW Group (consortium leader), the AUDI AG, Daimler AG, Opel Automobile GmbH, Volkswagen AG, Continental Teves AG & Co. oHG, Visteon Electronics Germany GmbH, ZF Friedrichshafen AG, Valeo Schalter und Sensoren GmbH, AVL Deutschland GmbH and PROSTEP AG, dSPACE GmbH. TÜV SÜD Auto Service GmbH and the German Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) deal with topics concerning the certification. The consortium leader is Robert Bosch GmbH.
