October 16, 2019: “Innovations and New Business Models in the Energy Sector”

Politically there are clear goals for the energy transition: In Germany, we want to obtain 30 percent of our energy consumption until 2030 and 60 percent until 2050 from renewable energy resources. This goal establishes new requirements and requires new economic solutions. Heretofore, it was for example possible to cover the well predictable demand for electricity through a controllable electricity feed of large power stations in grid operation. Decentral feeding photovoltaic systems, electric vehicles with high power requirements as well as the complicated forecast of renewable energy production constitute numerous new challenges. For an efficient operation of the energy system of the future, innovations and new business models are thus required, which make eco-friendly or grid-assistive operations also economically viable.

The expert event “Innovations and New Business Models in the Energy Sector” addresses start-ups from the energy sector. The aim of the event is to facilitate the exchange on the topic of innovations and new business models in the energy sector between interested persons, working on new solutions for the energy system of the future. Thereby, own projects and ideas can be presented in the framework of a poster pitch session – with the aim of receiving new impulses and constructive feedback from diverse perspectives and to extend solution approaches (see Call for Posters). The energy accelerator AXEL and the initiative focus.energy, driven by entrepreneurial-minded actors in the Karlsruhe TechnologyRegion, offer in the framework of their event session an overview as well as a subsequent presented exchange on innovative business models in the energy sector. In order to think outside the box and to give new impulses, there are no further thematic limits – future-oriented innovations can be associated with the fields of integrated energy management, electric mobility, flexibility development/-marketing, energy communities, landlord-to-tenant electricity supply, smart metering or grid expansion planning.

October 17, 2019: “Smart Metering for an Intelligent Energy Management”

The upcoming rollout of modern metering systems and smart meter gateways is an extensive task for the energy sector – not least recognisable by the procrastinating rollout. In the sector, there is overall confidence that by means of digitalised infrastructure potentials can be created, in order to make grid operation more efficient. However, new business models and products are required therefore, whereby a look on successful innovations continually illustrates that important advantages of digitalisation can only develop themselves, when it is not stuck with old solutions and mechanisms. Intelligent metering systems should thus not only be seen as replacement of the previous analogue metering infrastructure!

In the expert event “Smart Metering for an Intelligent Energy Management", intelligent metering systems are examined from various perspectives. The aim of the event is to bring representatives of organisations, working on or with intelligent metering systems and smart metering gateways or rather are significantly affected by them, into dialogue and to enable a perspective change, in order to use synergies and develop sustainable solution approaches. For this purpose, keynote speeches will initially give insights into various perspectives, while a common understanding and potentials in particular as well as still existing obstacles in the field of intelligent metering systems can be elaborated in a presented expert exchange based on this. The event explicitly addresses representatives from various fields, such as the energy industry, grid operation, flexibility marketing and -aggregation or science.
