More Control and Security for the Exchange of Health Data Using Blockchain Technology

The introduction of electronic health records promises a more efficient and effective medical care, but also raises concerns about data protection and data sovereignty. Over the next three years, the research project BloG³ will identify how blockchain technology can be used for the secure handling of health data.

Karlsruhe, 18.06.2020 - As of  January 1, 2021, it will be possible to voluntarily record the entire medical patient data in an electronic patient file (ePA) in one place and thus easily share them between hospitals, medical practices, pharmacies or health insurance companies as required. However, besides the advantages in everyday treatment for healthcare professionals and better medical care for patients, there are also security concerns relating to data protection.

In the research project BloG³ “Blockchain-basiertes Gesundheitsmanagement” (blockchain-based health management) research scientists have been designing and testing a data management system for the intersectoral exchange of health data based on blockchain technology since March 2020. "We want to give patients more sovereignty and security concerning their highly sensitive data. They should be able to monitor and control, who they give insight into their health data, how extensive this may be and whether they want to donate this data for research purposes or not, at any time. A comprehensive data basis is particularly essential for AI-based, personalised treatment options," states Prof. Wilhelm Stork, scientific director at the FZI. It is expected that the use of a decentralized blockchain system will provide great benefits to all parties. Over the next three years, the technical, economical and legal aspects and effects will be investigated in a real environment. The system will be developed specifically on the basis of discharge management and aftercare of oncology patients at the Charité in Berlin.

An interdisciplinary consortium was formed in order to achieve the project aims. Besides the FZI as project initiator and consortium leader, the consortium consists of representatives from the health care sector (Charité Berlin, Pflegewerk Berlin), from research (Freie Universität Berlin, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) and the industry (C&S Computer und Software GmbHnubedian GmbHeasierLife GmbHCircularTree GmbH, ITK Engineering AG).

The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and shall strengthen the research on human-technology interaction in digital platforms with regard to the German Federal Government's high-tech strategy. By integrating small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups, the transfer and utilization of the technology shall be ensured, while providing an innovation boost for German SMEs, at the same time.
