“Rising rents, hardly free areas but a great need especially for cheap housing,” analysed Lord Mayor of Karlsruhe Dr. Frank Mentrup the current situation at EXPO REAL. “If cities and conurbations are still going to be inhabited by everyone in the future, there is only the possibility to grow upwards.” Mentrup, Chair of the Supervisory Board of the TechnologieRegion Karlsruhe GmbH (TRK), emphasised: “We need a debate in Germany on how modern housing can look like in height. Here, I expect impetus from architects like Ole Scheeren who have already proven that modern architecture moves people into the centre despite developments moving into height, and thus can even create new urban areas.” “In Asia there is still a time of change: People are asking questions about the future. New models and prototypes are being developed for a future life,” reports architect Ole Scheeren, about his experiences that he has gained from two decades in Asia.

“A living space has to cope with different aspects. On the one hand, it has to deal with the location and context and on the other hand, ask more fundamental questions concerning the quality of life and the qualities we want to live with. In this sense, we aim to develop prototypes that pursue and forward these ideas, which are not only site specific but can also be realised in different contexts and forms.”

Scheeren, who studied amongst other universities at today’s Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), focused his keynote at EXPO REAL on further questions: “What do models of rethinking look like? How can new ways of thinking also inspire and form the German and European area, considering the challenges we have to face here in creating urban housing and living space?” The 47-year old concretised his ideas by means of current building projects in Singapore, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Peking, Vancouver as well as Frankfurt. He showed how living spaces can be shaped in the future, how architecture can put new life in urban areas and how buildings that were constructed by him are an enrichment for the people who live in them and use them.

In addition to the Lord Mayor of the City of Karlsruhe and Chair of the Supervisory Board of the Karlsruhe TechnologyRegion (TRK), Dr. Frank Mentrup, IHK President Wolfgang Grenke as well as Secretary of State of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Economic Affairs, Katrin Schütz were also at the booth in order to discuss the investments of the future as well as the real estate of tomorrow and to exchange views.

EXPO REAL is a must-attend for site marketing

The exhibitor group provided information about opportunities, innovations and products for future quarters as well as investment opportunities in the region and for the first time also for the Wirtschaftsstandort Elsass (business location Alsace) at the booth of the Karlsruhe TechnologyRegion at the 21st International Trade Fair for Property and Investment EXPO REAL in Munich from 8 to 10 October.

"The real estate industry continues to boom in 2018 – ideal conditions for successful networking and concrete business deals. As Europe’s leading fair, EXPO REAL is a must-attend for us as site marketer that we have been using successfully together with our partners for years", explains Jochen Ehlgötz, managing director of the TechnologieRegion Karlsruhe GmbH. "With the four new partners of evohaus GmbH, Vollack Gruppe, IHK Karlsruhe (Chamber of Commerce and Industry) as well as the Wirtschaftsstandort Elsass, were able to show the potentials and opportunities of the region to the international audience of the fair even better.

Our main topics at the TRK mobility, energy and digitalisation all play an important role in the future development of real estate and future quarters.” Future quarters necessitate the bundling of various competences in all phases – from the integrated planning to sustainable and cost-effective operation. "The fact that the TechnologyRegion has solution competence for future quarters was proven for example by our partner evohaus with the quarter Franklin in Mannheim," explains Ehlgötz.
