Abstract
Modern vehicles are equipped with numerous sensors as standard, which enable them to detect the operating condition and, to a certain extent, the surroundings of the vehicles. This study examined the possibility to estimate the quality and condition of road transport infrastructure and its changes by evaluating data of standard vehicle sensors. The innovative approach of such a near real-time based condition monitoring is the acquisition and preparation of vehicle-based sensor data, as well as the evaluation and mapping of infrastructure specific characteristics and their attributes from moving traffic. A further advantage of the approach is a database, which stores the information extracted from the sensor signals in near real-time and allows statistical evaluations, detection of specific events as well as trend analyses. Furthermore, the results can be improved in the back-end by combining the data from many vehicles and drives.
