Jonas Fegert is department head at FZI and leads the House of Participation – the Competence Center for Digital Democracy. At the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), he completed his PhD with Christof Weinhardt as his supervisor in Information Systems, including a stint as a Visiting Scholar at the University of Southern California. Previously, he studied Political Science, Governance, and Public Policy in Berlin, Friedrichshafen, and Porto Alegre. His studies and stays abroad were supported by scholarships from the Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich Studienwerk (ELES) and the BMW Foundation, among others.

Fegert has been working at the FZI since 2019 and is responsible for projects such as SOSEC (Landecker Foundation), VIRTUS (BMBF), TWON (EU Commission), and DeFaktS (BMBF). In these research projects, he and his team focus on societal polarization, combating and analyzing disinformation, digital citizen participation, and a modern digital government. At KIT, his Digital Democracy & Participation research group is engaged in these same topics.

From 2008 to 2014, he worked in the Bundestag, and from 2014 to 2018, he was involved as a speaker in the development of initiatives and structures of the Jewish Scholarship Fund ELES.

He is engaged within the association Die Wirtschaftsinformatik and serves as the deputy advisory board chairman of ELES. Fegert is a member of the Coalition for Pluralistic Public Discourse (CPPD) and an ROI Fellow of the Schusterman Foundation.
