Steffen Thoma studied Information Engineering and Management at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Subsequently, he completed his doctorate at the Institute for Applied Informatics and Formal Description Methods (AIFB) at KIT.

From 2014 to 2019, he worked as a Research Associate in the "Knowledge Management" and "Web Science" research groups at the AIFB.
In 2019, he received his doctorate in artificial intelligence with his dissertation "Multi-modal Data Fusion based on Embeddings."
Since April 2019, he has led the "Knowledge Management" department at the FZI.

Steffen Thoma is an author of scientific publications and reviewer at numerous top international conferences such as IJCAI (International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence), ECAI (European Conference on Artificial Intelligence), ISWC (International Semantic Web Conference), K-CAP (International Conference on Knowledge Capture) and Hypertext (ACM Conference on Hypertext and Hypermedia).
Furthermore, he has experience as a researcher, work package leader, and project manager in several publicly funded EU and national projects and directly commissioned projects in various application domains.
