Prof. Dr. Ing. Jürgen Becker is Head of the Institute for Information Processing Technologies of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technologies.

His research focus are innovative architectures and the efficient design of embedded systems, including dynamic reconfigurable hardware.  This includes Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) with multi core processors (Multi-/Many-Core), especially for safety critical applications, e.g. automotive-, avionics-, rail - and industrial automation.

Career

Oliver Bringmann studierte Informatik an der Universität Karlsruhe und promovierte 2001 an der Uni Tübingen. Anschließend war er bis 2012, zuletzt als Leiter des Forschungsbereichs „Intelligent Systems and Production Engineering“ am FZI tätig. Seit seinem Ruf an die Uni Tübingen leitet er dort den Lehrstuhl für Eingebettete Systeme und ist Sprecher des Fachbereichs Informatik. 2021 kehrte er als Direktor ans FZI zurück.

Seine Forschungsarbeiten befassen sich mit dem Entwurf, der Analyse und der Verifikation von verteilten Eingebetteten Systemen sowie deren Anwendungen in den Bereichen Automotive, Avionik, Internet-of-Things (IoT) und der Medizintechnik. Wachsende Sicherheitsanforderungen an autonome Systeme sowie die Entwicklung effizienter Stresstests spielen dabei eine zentrale Rolle. Der Forschungsfokus liegt auf den Feldern:

  • Entwurfsautomatisierung mikroelektronischer Systeme (EDA),
  • Embedded System Design,
  • Technologieprojektion und Architekturbewertung,
  • Performanz- und Poweranalyse eingebetteter Software,
  • Energieeffiziente KI-Architekturen,

Dr. Ingmar Baumgart leitet das Kompetenzzentrum IT-Sicherheit am FZI.

Zuvor studierte er Informatik an der Universität Karlsruhe (TH) mit den Schwerpunkten Kryptographie, Telematik und Recht. Nach Abschluss seines Studiums im Jahr 2005 hat er eine Stelle als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Institut für Telematik des Karlsruher Instituts für Technologie (KIT) angetreten. Die Schwerpunkte seiner Forschung waren der Entwurf und die Simulation von sicheren und effizienten Kommunikationsprotokollen für verteilte Systeme.

Nach Abschluss seiner Promotion im Jahr 2010 war Ingmar Baumgart Leiter einer Nachwuchsforschergruppe am KIT und arbeitete dort an technischen Verfahren zum Datenschutz in den Bereichen Energie, Mobilität und sozialen Netzwerken. Neben seiner Tätigkeit am FZI ist Ingmar Baumgart seit 2017 zudem Privatdozent am KIT. In der Lehre war er in den Bereichen Netzsicherheit, Mobilkommunikation, Multimediakommunikation und Internet of Things aktiv.

Ingmar Baumgart ist zertifizierter TeleTrusT Information Security Professional (T.I.S.P.).

Friedrich Gauger studierte Volkswirtschaftslehre, International Business und Wirtschaftsingenieurwesen an den Universitäten Freiburg/Brsg, Denpasar/Indonesien und KIT Karlsruhe sowie an der Universidade Federal do Paraná in Curitiba/Brasilien wo er seine Diplomarbeit zum Thema "A Novel Placement Mechanism for Dialysis Porewater Samplers" verfasste. Im Juni 2014 brachte er als Stipendiat ein Thema zur Erforschung der Elektrophysiologie der Narkolepsie, einer seltenen Schlaf-Wach-Erkrankung ans FZI. Sein Forschungsinteresse liegt im Spannungsfeld von neurologischen Erkrankungen, Schlaf und Circadianer Rhythmik sowie intelligenter körpernaher Sensorik.

Career

Matthias Kern is a trained mechatronics technician and studied electrical engineering and information technology at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) with a focus on systems engineering. He already wrote his master's thesis at the FZI. Since February 2016 he has been working as a research assistant at the FZI in the ESS research area. His research topic is the model-based design support of security-by-design for Industry 4.0. To this end, he researches methods to be able to comprehensibly describe design decisions with regard to cybersecurity in the concept phase. In the European ITEA 3 research project ASSUME he was able to gather international research experience. In the BMBF-funded DEFEnD research project, he is researching how security-by-design can be implemented in the automotive sector, taking into account current standards such as ISO / SAE 21434. To demonstrate and evaluate his methods, he is working on a software demonstrator that is programmed in Java based on the Eclipse Modeling Framework (EMF) and other plug-ins. There are numerous topics related to this software demonstrator for academic theses, internships and jobs for student assistants. Supervising student work is important to him in order to give students an insight into current research.

Sven Nitzsche studierte am Karlsruher Institut für Technolgie Elektro- und Informationstechnik mit Schwerpunkt System-on-Chip. From April 2011 to December 2012 Sebastian Ottlik worked as a research assistant at the Department of Microelectronic System Design (SIM) of the FZI. During this time he also wrote his diploma thesis on the extension of an instruction set simulator to determine the execution time of programs (German title: "Erweiterung eines Instruktionssatzsimulators zur Bestimmung der Ausführungszeit von Programmen"). After graduating with a focus on operating systems and compiler construction, he began his work as a research scientist in January 2013.

Victor Pazmino Betancourt

Victor Pazmino studied from 2011 to 2016 electrical engineering and information technology at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Focuses during his studies were systems engineering, system-on-chip and embedded systems design. He wrote his master thesis entitled “Modelling of embedded software functions for heterogeneous embedded systems” already at FZI. Since January 2017 he is employed as research scientist in the research group ESS at FZI.

Since 2018, Victor Pazmino is head of the group Embedded Computing Systems from Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. h. c. Jürgen Becker. The group focuses on AI hardware acceleration, edge computing, embedded security and model-based security-by-design. There is close cooperation with KIT and various industrial partners in the domains Automotive and Industry 4.0.

His personal research focus is on heterogeneous embedded architectures and task allocation algorithms for edge computing, including the use of hardware accelerators, container technologies and model-based design methods.

Sebastian Reiter studied computer science at the University Karlsruhe (TH) from 8/2002 to 3/2008. Research focus was the design of embedded systems and computer architectures, telematics and systems engineering. The topic of his diploma thesis was "Design and Implementation of an Array-Based Data Path Concept for Autonomous Realization of DSP Algorithms".

From 8/2008 to 3/2010 he worked as a system developer at the XTRONIC GmbH. His work included the conception and design of test equipment for the automotive domain.

Since 4/2010 he is a research assistant in the department SiM.

Career

His main fields of activity were hardware and software development for embedded systems. In his research and teaching, he was especially concerned with hardware/software co-design and verification, computer architectures, parallel processing and neural networks.

Wolfgang Rosenstiel joined the FZI in 1986 and was group leader in the field of "Automation of Circuit Design" for four years. After his call to the University of Tübingen in 1990, he continued to work tirelessly for the FZI as a scientific director. On August 19, 2020, Professor Wolfgang Rosenstiel died after a long illness at the age of 65. We are deeply saddened to say goodbye to a friend, supervisor and colleague who rendered outstanding services to the FZI for decades.

Die Studienschwerpunkte lagen in der Architektur und der kryptographischen Absicherung von Softwaresystemen und dem Entwurf und der Architektur eingebetteter Systeme und Mikroprozessoren. Weiterhin beschäftigte er sich mit Medizintechnik.

Seit Oktober 2004 ist er wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter, seit August 2007 Projektleiter, seit April 2012 Abteilungsleiter am FZI Forschungszentrum Informatik in der Abteilung Systementwurf in der Mikroelektronik (SiM).

Seit Juli 2016 leitet Alexander Viehl den Bereich Intelligent Systems and Production Engineering (ISPE) des FZI.

Seine Arbeiten liegen in den Bereichen der modellgetriebenen Entwurfsmethodik für sicherheitskritische eingebettete Hardware-/Software-Systeme, der Verifikation und Absicherung technischer Systeme, Optimierungsverfahren und Entwurfsraumexploration für softwareintensive Mehrkernsysteme, Virtual Prototyping cyber-physikalischer Systeme, energieeffizienter und sicherer Assistenzsysteme sowie IKT für die Elektromobilität.

Career

Oliver Werthwein hat eine Ausbildung als Elektroniker für Geräte und Systeme absolviert und studierte Elektro- und Informationstechnik am Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT), der Schwerpunkt lag dabei im Fachgebiet „Information & Automation“. Während des Studiums galt sein Interesse vor allem den Bereichen künstliche Intelligenz, Computer Vision, Automatisierung/Digitalisierung und Data Science. Seine Masterarbeit mit dem Titel "Entwicklung und Design eines KI-gestützten Augmented Vision Human Robot Interfaces zur Steuerung eines Roboterarms" schrieb er bereits am FZI.

Seit Juli 2021 arbeitet er als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter im Forschungsbereich Embedded Systems and Sensors Engineering (ESS).

Career

Christoph Zimmermann studied Electrical and Information Engineering at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Priorities during his studies were in the field of biomedical engineering. His diploma thesis entitled "Development and Evaluation of algorithms for online- and offline-analysis of EDA-signals" was written at movisens GmbH in Germany.

In July 2013 has work started as a Research Scientist at FZI in the Embedded Systems and Sensor Engineering (ESS) department.

Since Juliy 2017 Christoph Zimmermann is working as a departement manager in ESS.
