Innovative Health Care Applications

In the research focus Medical Information Technology at the FZI, we develop innovative solutions for future personal health care applications. In this context, systems for unobtrusive and continuous monitoring and evaluation of a patient’s health state play an important role. For instance, these systems gather information about the patient’s activities or carry out an ECG. The spectrum of the scientific work at the FZI covers various topics such as the development of new unobtrusive sensors and actuators in the field of smart textiles and mobile systems as well as ambient monitoring systems. In order to support diagnostic and therapeutic measures, we develop algorithms for real time analyses of various physiological parameters via embedded low-power systems. Our research work is linked with e-health programs that we develop in our research focus Telemedicine and Health Care for instance. The results of these studies contribute to the improvement of medical health care and active self-management as well as to the patients’ life quality. Furthermore, they help saving costs in the health care sector.

Along with these research focuses, the FZI also does research on the use of medical sensors for the purpose of non-medical applications. Thus, we develop sensor-based biofeedback applications to support learning processes in the field of technology enhanced learning (TEL) and use vital data for advanced driver assistance systems in automotive applications.

Johannes Schneider

Department Manager

Johannes Schneider studied Electrical and Information Engineering at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Priorities during his studies were Industrial Information Systems, Computational Intelligence and Bio-signal processing. His diploma thesis entitled "Design and integration of a system for capacitive ECG measurement and simultaneous evaluation of context information in a test vehicle" he wrote already at FZI. Since April 2012 he is employed as a visiting researcher at FZI.
