Virtual Prototyping and Life Cycle Management


The applied research work in this field focuses on technologies and methods for the virtualised planning and the design of complex intelligent systems by tracing, monitoring and simulating their state as well as the relation between efficiency and usage. Thus, it is possible to holistically analyse and model the various dependencies and requirements concerning intelligent systems throughout their entire life cycle.

We develop design tools in order to evaluate software for embedded systems at an early production and design stage in interaction with its underlying hardware and its physical environment by considering the entire system configuration and integration via virtual prototypes and in order to perform application-specific optimisations. Our research work is aimed at the examination of problems concerning industrial practice. For instance, our research findings are used to enable the implementation of intelligent assistance systems in application areas such as the automotive industry and industrial automation.

Furthermore, we develop methods to gather and to analyse application and product-related data from the production and usage stage and from its use in the development process. In this context, we carry out life cycle and robustness analyses as well as analyses of the products’ versatility at an early production stage. Thus, producing companies are able to systematically gather information about state, efficiency and utilisation of the application field of their products and specifically use it to safeguard, optimise and manage their products and services.

Jana Deckers studierte am Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT) Wirtschaftsingenieurwesen von 2009 bis 2015. Anschließend an ihr Studium fing Frau Deckers als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Institut für Informationsmanagement im Ingenieurwesen (IMI) am KIT an und führt ihre Forschungsarbeit seit 2016 am FZI Forschungszentrum Informatik in der Abteilung Process- and Data Management in Engineering fort. Seit Anfang 2017 leitet sie diese Abteilung.

Ihr Forschungsinteresse gilt der Anwendung und Prozessintegration von Virtuellen Zwillingen im Produktlebenszyklus für eine durchgängige Kollaboration in der gesamten Wertschöpfungskette
