Automation and Robotics


The industrial production is heading towards its 4th revolution: after the invention of mechanical machines, assembly lines and the first programmable logic controllers, information and communication technologies are up-and-coming. Machines communicate with machines, things with things, and both of it with human beings, of course. We develop concepts, methods, tools and software/hardware solutions for design, planning, commissioning and secure operation of ICT-automated production. Besides, we work on autonomous robots for flexible manufacturing and assistance.

The experts have introduced the terms Industry 4.0 and “Integrated Industry“ in place of the ICT-automated production of the next generation. The systems themselves are referred to as cyber physical systems. They arise from networking and interaction of resources among themselves as well as with human beings in their new role as participants of the semi-autonomous operating overall system. At the FZI, six work priorities are in the focus of the application area of automation and robotics: conception, development of architectures, security, mobile production robots, user support and knowledge-based diagnosis. In this process, we work closely with partners from the industry.

Arne Rönnau studierte von 2002 bis 2008 Elektrotechnik und Informationstechnik an der Universität Karlsruhe (TH). Die Schwerpunkte des Studiums lagen in den Bereichen der Regelungs- und Steuerungstechnik sowie Robotik. Seine Diplomarbeit befasste sich mit der Steuerung und 3D-Umweltmodellierung für den sechsbeinigen Laufroboter LAURON. Diese führte er in Kooperation mit der Technischen Universität Karlsruhe in der Abteilung Interaktive Diagnose- und Servicesysteme (IDS) am Forschungszentrum Informatik (FZI) durch. Seit November 2008 ist er wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter in der Abteilung IDS und arbeitet an der Optimierung von technischen Laufvorgängen (Laufroboter LAURON), 3D-Datenerfasssung und Umweltmodellierung sowie der Entwicklung innovativer Serviceroboter.

Seit April 2011 leitet er die Abteilung Interaktive Diagnose- und Servicesysteme (IDS).
