Solutions for the energy system of tomorrow

Fluctuating energy production through renewable energies influences the stability of the electricity grid. Critical grid segments have to be monitored and it may be necessary to decrease the energy feed-in. At the FZI, we develop methods for the continuous monitoring of the state of the grid, and for the intelligent control of flexible consumers and other relevant components of the power grid.

Buildings as well as production facilities should be made intelligent and thus, for example, they should be enabled to make consumption flexible, avoid peak loads, and provide system services. In order to flexibly distribute energy consumption, energy producers, consumers and storages have to be connected via information and communication technologies (ICT). Researchers at the FZI work on distributed ICT infrastructures and software architectures for an integrated energy management in buildings and production. This includes the definition of respective data models and investigations on optimisation algorithms for the coordination of the energy flows. Approaches and solutions are developed and tested in the FZI Living Lab smartEnergy, which provides an extensively equipped research environment at the FZI House of Living Labs.

Besides the technological integration, the development of incentive systems is an important task. In order to coordinate energy supply and energy demand within a smart grid in an intelligent way, we design and evaluate methods that consider aspects such as location, time or usage to adjust the energy consumption to the fluctuating energy production.

Research Focuses

Energy Management

The interconnection of relevant components of the energy system builds the foundation for an intelligent control of energy demand and supply. In the research focus Energy Management we develop and evaluate information and communication technologies that enable an efficient and economic operation of the future energy system.

Electric Mobility

In the research focus Electric Mobility we develop and evaluate mobility concepts and methods for electrically operated vehicles. This includes methods for range optimisation, future concepts of interconnected mobility, and the integration of future electric mobility concepts into the transportation and energy infrastructure.

Market and Feedback Mechanisms for Smart Grids

In the research focus Market and Feedback Mechanisms for Smart Grids the focus lies on economic mechanisms for a decentralised coordination of energy demand and supply in local and regional energy systems.

Smart Home und Ambient Assisted Living

In the research focus Smart Home and Ambient Assisted Living the focus lies on the interconnection of sensors and actuators in domestic environments with the goal of a safe and comfortable living. Thus, household appliances, smart plugs and gateways are used and extended by communication interfaces for the integration into the energy management.


Manuel Lösch (M.Sc.)

Department Manager



Manuel Lösch studied computer science and business informatics. He holds a master's degree in business informatics from University of Mannheim in which he specialized on “systems design and development”, and a bachelor's degree in computer science from Hochschule Furtwangen University. Besides semesters abroad in the USA and in the Republic of China, he gained practical experiences in the area of software development with IBM Research & Development and with SAP Research.

Since 2013, Manuel Lösch has been working at the FZI. His research focuses on IT-based solutions for the energy system of the future — since 2018 as manager of the research department “Intelligent Information and Communication in Technical Systems” (IIK). His particular interest lies in the grid-supportive flexibilization of electricity consumption and generation. In addition, he is responsible for the FZI Living Lab smartEnergy in which innovative energy management solutions are prototypically developed and evaluated together with partners from industry and science.
