Adaptive, Intuitive Assistance System for Intelligent Building Control (AICASys)

The project AICASys aims to enable wheelchair-bound persons to live a more autonomous and self-determined life in their own four walls. By means of an autonomously operating wheelchair and eye tracking glasses, visual scanning patterns of the affected person shall be recognised, the wheelchair shall be controlled via context information and items in the flat shall be switched as well as aid shall be provided in particular situations. Carers and relatives shall thus be supported in the care of the affected person.

For this purpose, services are developed in the framework of the project, which are integrated via a platform and thus provide the user with their services through speech. The increasing number of persons in need of care has an effect on the time management of professional care. In the meantime, care documentation is being reduced to fundamental characteristics and standardised, in order to save time. Many personal information, which are important for a targeted cooperation, go beyond the previous, performance-affecting documentation. Individual aspects such as the emotional state of the person in need of care, preferences but also dislikes are thus not recorded. In order to fill this gap, there are numerous applications for family carers. However, no additional information exchange takes place. All technological applications for the care documentation are either only geared towards professional or informal care. As a result, there is a lack of a technological solution that combines both aspects.

The aim of the project is thus to support the simple exchange between relatives and professional carers regarding the care situation of elderly persons and persons in need of support.

For this purpose, application fields are defined, implemented and tested in laboratory and field studies, in order to detect advantages and disadvantages of smart glasses (like Google Glass) and to give recommendations in how to implement AR technologies age-appropriately.

AuRorA - Autonomous robots for assistance functions: Interactive basic skills

Current developments in the context of human-robot cooperation in production, but also advances in the areas of manipulation and navigation, open up new opportunities and markets for service robots outside industrial workshops. This project concentrates on supporting and relieving people through interactive, proactive robot behaviour in a smart home or smart hotel. The robot serves as a real avatar that makes interaction with the abstract environment easier and more natural and offers motor assistance.

In a smart home or smart hotel, a proactive robot supports and relieves the occupants or guests of everyday tasks. What is innovative is that the robot independently learns new interactive behavior that links events such as "ringing at the door" with robot reactions. Depending on the transition probabilities already learned, the robot's dialogue with humans changes from a questioning to an informative character. The adaptive dialogues together with the non-verbal reactions of the robot ensure a high acceptance and quality of the interaction. The learned behaviour will be intensively evaluated in two practical scenarios, receiveing/guiding guests and cooking, with regard to robustness and transferability.

EmAsIn - Emotion-sensitive Assistance Systems for the Reactive Psychological Interaction with Humans

Motivation:

Bipolar affective disorders and dementias are accompanied by a high level of psychological strain for those affected and often pose great challenges to them as well as their relatives, doctors and related persons in everyday life. The aim of our research project is to examine whether the previous treatment options can be usefully complemented by the use of a customisable, cooperative assistance system. Besides disease-related situations, the new system shall also detect social behaviours and cues of human communication. Through an efficient interaction with the patients, critical situations shall be positively influenced and the quality of life of the persons affected shall be increased by means of the assistance system.

 

Solution approach:

The aim of the project is to develop a customisable, cooperative assistance system for people with dementia or affective disorders. The assistance system shall be optimally customisable, detect human communication habits and thus derive emotional and mental states. Moreover, an intuitive interaction between humans and technology is aimed, by expanding the pure information exchange, which has been prevailing in technical assistance systems so far, by socio-emotional messages based on innovative interaction concepts. In doing so, the user acceptance of technological assistance systems shall be increased and the use as a partner-like companion shall be enabled.

GeriNetzBW

The aim of the research project GeriNetzBW is to support and exemplarily develop local, geriatric supply networks with ambulant, integrated and stationary offers. Supported by appropriate IT structures, the exchange of information between the actors involved in the care of geriatric patients shall be improved.

The background of this project is the holistic approach of care, which is needed by this patient group. The care of geriatric patients requires interdisciplinary work of the numerous professional groups (care, therapists, general practitioner, specialist, rehabilitation facilities, medical supply stores) involved into the care. Often there is no exchange among themselves or there is a lack of appropriate coordinating bodies (e.g. the case management). GeriNetzBW thus addresses still lacking, concrete and networked concepts, so that the actors involved in these geriatric networks can work together efficiently.

Therefore an urban supply network (Mannheim) as well as a network in the rural area (Bad Friedrichshall)  shall be exemplarily developed, supported and compared.

The objectives of the project are:

  • Process development for the professional coordination of patient assessments
  • Support in networking through a common data pool
  • Anonymised long-term archiving, quality assurance, benchmarking

The aim of the project HEIKE, funded by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Housing in the framework of the innovation alliance Innovationsallianz innBW, is to develop new, technology-based possibilities that support nursing staff members in hospitals in measures for patients and thus increase their compliance concerning the hand disinfection.

A mobile, networked disinfection dispenser as well as augmented reality provide the basis. The technologies are further developed in the project and integrated into a system that automatically recognises the conducted actions on the patient and makes additional information available based on it. Eventually, the conducted measures are automatically documented in the system, which decreases the management overheads for the operational staff.

The project partners are the Institute for Laser Technology in Medicine and Measurement Technique (ILM), the Hahn-Schickard Institute in Villingen-Schwenningen as well as the Hahn-Schickard Institute for Micro Assembly Technology in Stuttgart. The project duration is limited to three years.

The rolling exhibition shows age-appropriate assistance systems in a mobile showroom, modelled on an apartment. Thus, various application and implementation possibilities can be demonstrated on site, in order to overcome fears of contact of technological systems and to promote their acceptance. In the project "Hilfreiche Technik in der Praxis - Beratung und Schulung von Multiplikatoren in der rollenden Ausstellung" (helpful technology in practice - consulting and training for multipliers in the rolling exhibition) the aim is to open up regions in Baden-Württemberg that could not be visited by the rolling exhibition so far. Furthermore, especially multipliers (like craftsmen) shall be reached. The project is funded by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Integration with funds provided by the State of Baden-Württemberg.

KommmiT

Das Verbundprojekt KommmiT adressiert die Förderung und Stärkung der sozialen und digitalen Teilhabe am gesellschaftlichen Leben und der zwischenmenschlichen, generationsübergreifenden Kommunikation älterer Menschen, des Zugangs zu strukturierten Informationen sowie der Ausbau kommunaler und regionaler Unterstützungs- und Versorgungsstrukturen im Raum Stuttgart.

Innerhalb der Projektlaufzeit wird ein Netzwerk aufgebaut bestehend aus bürgerschaftlich engagierten Alltags- und Technikassistenten, welche zum Einen technikunerfahrenen und älteren Personenkreisen die Barrieren in Nutzung und Handhabung neuer technischer Geräte und Kommunikationsmedien durch z.B. Tablet- Schulungskurse nehmen und zum Anderen hilfebedürftigen älteren Menschen in alltäglichen Tätigkeiten unterstützen sollen. Ergänzt werden diese Alltags- und Technikassistenten durch ein professionelles Dienstleisternetzwerk, koordiniert durch regionale Servicebüros.

Mit Hilfe einer modulare und individualisierbare Tablet- Applikation (App) für ältere Menschen soll außerdem der Zugang zu den entwickelten Versorgungsstrukturen gestärkt werden, um so möglichst lange Autonomie in der eigenen Häuslichkeit gewährleisten zu können.  Die App bietet neben dem Bereich für Kommunikation auch Angebote zur Unterhaltung, umfassende Informationen, Hilfen zur Tagesgestaltung und die Möglichkeit, Dienstleistungen zu bestellen.

Während der Durchführung des Vorhabens wird zwei Nutzergruppen besondere Beachtung geschenkt, welchen bisher in Forschungsprojekten wenig Beachtung bei der Ansprache, Gestaltung der Teilhabe und der Angebotsgestaltung beigemessen wurde. Dazu zählen ältere Menschen, die alleinlebend und überwiegend isoliert leben und ein kleines soziales Netzwerk aufweisen sowie ältere Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund. So sollen mehr Kenntnisse zu bisherig vernachlässigten jedoch bedeutsamen Subgruppen hinsichtlich IT in der Forschung und kommunalen Praxis gewonnen werden.

LIDARsee

LiDARSee ist eines der 10 Siegerprojekte des Wettbewerbs "Light Cares" (Photonische Technologien für Menschen mit Behinderung) welche im Rahmen des Förderprogramms "Photonik Forschung Deutschland" des BMBF gefördert werden.

Ziel des Projekts ist die prototypische Entwicklung einer auf LiDAR-Sensorik basierenden Mobilitätshilfe für Personen mit wesentlicher Sehbehinderung oder Blindheit. Lidar steht für Light Detection and Ranging und bezeichnet ein Verfahren, bei welchem über die Laufzeit eines ausgesendet Lichtstrahl die Entfernung zu Gegenständen bestimmt werden kann. LiDAR-Sensorik findet Einsatz in der Navigation und Umgebungserkennung bei Drohnen, Staubsaugerrobotern oder auch autonom fahrenden Autos.

Im Rahmen des Projekts soll die Sensorik, integriert in einen Hut, Mütze oder eine Brosche in Kombination mit weiterer Sensorik die Umgebung scannen, Hindernisse detektieren und dem blinden Nutzer detaillierte Informationen zum Umfeld über taktiles Feedback geben.

Neben dem FZI Forschungszentrum Informatik sind als assoziierte Partner das FabLab Karlsruhe e.V., das Studienzentrum für Sehgeschädigte am KIT sowie die ELOVIS GmbH beteiligt. Durch Einbindung der Makerszene sollen die Ergebnisse auch nach Ende der Projektlaufzeit für jeden zugänglich und veränderbar sein. Ziel ist es, durch den OpenSource-Gedanken, die im Projekt gesammelten Erkenntnisse im Interesse möglichst vieler Nutzer einzusetzen.

The target system is developed in cooperation with movisens GmbH and consists of an easy-to-use mobile sensor solution for unobtrusive monitoring of EDA, online classification of EDA in correlates of emotional arousal, as well as an emotion-based human-computer interface for innovative human-computer interaction. The system can be used for field studies as well as innovative concepts of coaching and therapy. FZI is particularly involved in the development of suitable algorithms for near real-time processing of EDA under everyday conditions as well as the validation of the system in this project.

Das Ziel ist die Bereitstellung einer Entwicklungsumgebung, die die Entwickler adaptiver Endgeräte und Benutzerschnittstellen unterstützen soll. Ein spezieller Fokus wird dabei auf die Zielgruppe Alternde und Schlaganfall-Patienten gelegt, die nur noch eingeschränkt mit technischen Endgeräten interagieren können. Solche Geräte umfassen z. B. unterhaltungselektronische oder tele-medizinische Geräte oder auch computergestützte Physiotherapieprogramme.

PflegeCoDe

Die steigende Zahl von Demenzerkrankungen und die Herausforderungen bei der Versorgung von Menschen mit Demenz hat nicht nur Angehörige und Pflegende für dieses Thema sensibilisiert. Als wichtiges gesellschaftliches Thema, auch für die Zukunft, müssen neue Ansätze für den Umgang mit dieser Erkrankung gefunden werden. Als eines der entscheidenden Themen wurden dabei die Unterstützung der Pflegenden durch geeignete Informationen und ein besseres Verständnis des Verlaufs der demenziellen Erkrankung ermittelt. Diese Informationen helfen bei der Früherkennung der Erkrankung und erste Maßnahmen zur Erhaltung der kognitiven Fähigkeiten sowie intensive Aktivierungsübungen können angebahnt werden.

 

Die kontinuierliche Beobachtung des weiteren Verlaufs der Erkrankung ist dabei ebenfalls wichtig und gibt den Angehörigen und Pflegenden mehr Sicherheit. Auf Basis aktueller Technologien soll darum ein interaktiver elektronischer Coach entwickelt werden, der technische, medizinische und organisatorische Lösungen miteinander verbindet, um den Verlauf einer Demenz von Beginn an positiv zu beeinflussen und für alle Akteure eine weit höhere Lebensqualität zu erreichen. Das hier vorgestellte Projekt PflegeCoDe ist ein Support-System für Angehörige und Pflegende welches über den gesamten Verlauf der Demenz die individuelle Lebenssituation des betroffenen Patienten mittels neuartiger Technologien unterstützt.

QuartrBack

QuartrBack ist ein Forschungs- und Entwicklungsprojekt, das vom Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF, 05.15-04.18) gefördert wird. Projektziel ist es, in einem Bürger-Profi-Technik-Mix Technologien aus den Bereichen Ortung und Mobiltelefonie zu entwickeln und für ein ehrenamtliches Helfernetz einzusetzen, um Menschen mit Demenz auch und gerade bei zunehmender Desorientierung ein Mehr an Bewegung zu ermöglichen, Freiheiten zu schaffen, Gesundheit zu fördern und Angehörige zu entlasten. Im Spannungsfeld von den Bedürfnissen nach Sicherheit und dem Anspruch an Teilhabe tauchen Fragen auf, die eine ethische, fachliche und auch rechtliche Diskussion notwendig machen.

In the project ROBINA, a breakthrough in the development of the direct human-robot interaction and robotic care is achieved: The combination of sensitive robot hardware with force-regulated robot controllers of the FZI enable the execution of sensitive tasks such as scratching with a brush.

Ziel von SecoServ2 ist eine sichere und zuverlässige Kommunikations- und Informationsplattform für dynamische Einsatzszenarien im Sicherheitsbereich auf Basis heterogener (Ad-Hoc-) Kommunikationsarchitekturen und mobiler Informationsgeräte zu entwickeln. Einerseits werden über diese Plattform lokale Arbeitsabläufe wie Patientensichtung und -überwachung bei einem Massenanfall von Verletzten und die Lokalisierung organisiert. Zusätzlich ist allerdings auch die Integration nachgelagerter Versorgungsprozesse wie der Transport in Zielkliniken oder der Informationsaustausch mit Stäben und Patientenauskunftstellen vorgesehen.

Simulative Unterstützung bei der Neubauplanung der St. Vincentius-Kliniken gAG

Die St. Vincentius-Kliniken in Karlsruhe befinden sich aktuell in der Planungsphase eines Klinikneubaus, der die auf das Stadtgebiet verteilten Standorte zusammenführen soll. Mit dem Ziel, die zukünftigen räumlichen Gegebenheiten prozessoptimiert gestalten zu können, führt das FZI simulations-basierte Analysen durch, wobei bestehende Prozesse auf das zukünftige Raumlayout projiziert werden. Hierdurch entsteht eine objektive Bewertungsgrundlage zur Identifikation räumlicher Engpässe.

SINQ

Ziel des Projektes ist die Schließung der Informations- und Dienstleistungslücke zwischen der Betreuung und den Bedürfnissen von Patienten für ein selbstbestimmtes Leben. Hierfür wird ein Klienten-Portal im Einklang mit der Rechtsordnung innerhalb des Stadtquartiers Neckarstadt-West in Mannheim erarbeitet, das alle Akteure zusammenbringt. Zusätzliche Informationstechnik, Sensorik und Hausautomation ermöglicht die weitere Unterstützung geriatrischer Patienten in ihren eigenen vier Wänden. Ein anschließender Transfer auf weitere Quartiere bzw. Städte ist geplant. 

Partner hierbei sind der Mannheimer Quartiermanagement e.V., das geriatrische Zentrum der Universitätsmedizin Mannheim, das Institut für Technik der Betriebsführung im DHI e.V., die CAS Software AG, sowie die YellowMap AG.

situCare

Ziel des BMBF-Projekts situCare ist es neue Mensch-Technik-Interaktionssysteme und darauf aufbauende pflegerische Versorgungsprozesse und –Strukturen im Bereich der häuslichen (Intensiv-)Pflege zu entwickeln. Dazu werden technische Möglichkeiten zur situativen Unterstützung in Krisensituationen bereitgestellt. Darüber hinaus soll mit Hilfe von IT-gestützten Werkzeugen zu Versorgungssteuerung und -Management die Koordination zwischen den beteiligten Akteuren im Pflegenetzwerk effizienter gestaltet und somit das psychosoziale Wohlbefinden sowohl der pflegenden Angehörigen als auch der Patienten selbst gesteigert werden.

Grundlagen dafür bilden neuartige Möglichkeiten zur Mensch-Technik-Interaktion, wie Augmented-Reality-Technik, ambiente Sensorik und interaktive vernetzte Objekte. Diese Technologien sollen weiterentwickelt und in einem System integriert werden, welches Pflegesituationen selbständig erkennt, den pflegenden Angehörigen situative Hilfestellungen bei der Bedienung von Geräten gibt und die Kommunikation mit den anderen Akteuren im Pflege- und Versorgungsnetz unterstützt.

Projektpartner sind die ViatlAire Group, das Palliativnetz Freiburg, die Nubedian GmbH sowie die Hochschule Furtwangen. Die Projektlaufzeit beträgt 3 Jahre.

SleepCoach

Schlaf  ist  ein  Grundbedürfnis  des  Menschen  und  Voraussetzung  für  Gesundheit  und  Lebensqualität. Ist  der  Schlaf über längere Zeit gestört, führt dies zu einer reduzierten körperlichen und geistigen Leistungsfähigkeit. Um Defizite in der Schlafqualität und im Schlafverhalten frühzeitig zu erkennen und diesen entgegenwirken zu können, entwickelt das FZI im Rahmen  des Projekts SleepCoach zusammen mit der movisens GmbH und dem  Zentrum für Schlafmedizin am Universitätsklinikum Freiburg ein ambulantes System zur Analyse der Schlafqualität und deren Verbesserung durch ursachengerechtes Coaching.

Stroke Angel – Verbesserte Versorgung von Schlaganfallpatienten durch Telemedizin

Stroke Angel ist ein neues System, das nach dem Konzept „Time is Brain“ funktioniert und mit dessen Hilfe die schnelle und kompetente Versorgung von Schlaganfall-Patienten gesichert werden soll. Eine spezielle Software ermöglicht es dabei dem Rettungsassistenten bereits am Notfallort wichtige Informationen über den Patienten in das Gerät einzugeben und diese dann per Funkverbindung an das Zielkrankenhaus zu übermitteln. So kann sich das Ärzteteam im Krankenhaus bereits vor Eintreffen des Rettungswagens optimal auf den Patienten vorbereiten und wertvolle Zeit gewonnen werden.

TrinkTracker - Assistenzsystem zur Unterstützung adäquater Flüssigkeitsaufnahme in der Pflege

Das Projekt TrinkTracker will für eine ausreichende Flüssigkeitsversorgung bei älteren Menschen sorgen. Dazu wird ein technikgestützter Trinkassistent entwickelt, der neben der automatischen Erfassung und Dokumentation der getrunkenen Flüssigkeitsmenge den Nutzer auch animieren soll, täglich eine ausreichende Menge zu trinken. Das TrinkTracker-System soll somit Sicherheit im Trinkmanagement geben und wird sowohl für die professionelle als auch die häusliche Pflege entwickelt. Es soll die Pflegenden unterstützen und entlasten sowie die Älteren zum ausreichenden Trinken motivieren.

UniversAAL – der Weg zu intelligenten Wohnumgebungen

universAAL ist ein EU-Forschungsprojekt im 7. Rahmenprogramm, das durch eine technische Infrastruktur älteren Menschen länger ein unabhängiges Leben in ihrer gewohnten Umgebung ermöglichen soll. Hierbei steht eine positiv besetzte Unterstützung im Vordergrund, die nicht nur in Problem- oder Notfallsituationen eingreift, sondern grundsätzlich die Lebensqualität von älteren Menschen verbessert. Ziel ist die Entwicklung einer Referenzarchitektur zur Verknüpfung verschiedener AAL-Lösungsansätze.

xDELIA

Goal of the EU-project xDelia is to produce both knowledge and novel applications capable of improving financial decision making in three different fields of practice: professional trading, private investment, and personal finance. The project uses and also evaluates the potential of games, game technologies, and sensors as components in learning support environments, and as tools to conduct experimental and field research.

The choice of these technologies for improving learning outcomes is motivated by recent findings in the expertise and decision making literature. Those are pointing to the importance for competence building of contextual and psychological validity, and of the need for timely and relevant feedback. Games and sensors allow to incorporate the characteristic of context validity and feedback into learning support environments.
