Future Initiative Test | Field Urban Robotics
Real-world laboratory for research and innovation in robotics in public spaces in Baden-Württemberg
Start: 01/2026
End: 06/2027

Advances in robotics are opening up opportunities for robots to be used outside traditional industrial environments. Robots have the potential to make everyday tasks easier, fill gaps in supply chains, or take over the maintenance of green spaces: urban robotics is on the verge of practical application in public spaces. However, the final step requires testing and research data from public spaces, where robots are not currently permitted.
As part of this development project, we are examining the framework conditions and carrying out preliminary work for a test field for urban robotics: In Karlsruhe, we plan a location for the development, testing, and optimization of new products and services for researchers, start-ups, and SMEs in a real-world environment. Such a real-world laboratory brings the use of this technology in public spaces one step closer.
Role of the FZI
The FZI is responsible for coordinating all stakeholders and developing the overall concept, including a demonstration for evaluation purposes towards the end of the project period.

Work will begin in January 2026 – and with it, the networking. Stakeholders from Karlsruhe and across Germany are cordially invited to get in touch with us. Please feel free to contact us if you have any suggestions or would like to share your requirements for an Urban Robotics Test Field with us.
