EnQS as a Partner for Sustainable Energy Supply
Effective Technology Transfer
EnQS demonstrates how research is put into practice: founded as a spin-off, the company is now firmly established in the market. It is making an essential contribution to the energy transition.
Research as a foundation, looking to the future
EnQS has its roots at the FZI in Karlsruhe. At the FZI Living Lab smartEnergy, founder Dr. Birger Becker spent many years working on practical research projects related to decentralized energy systems, smart grids, and intelligent building automation. In the process, he realized that there is often a gap between theoretical research and industrial practice, especially where computer science and electrical engineering intersect. After completing his doctorate, Birger Becker decided in 2016 to close this gap and founded EnQS GmbH.
What makes EnQS special
EnQS stands for “Energy Quality Services”, and it provides a clear promise: individual support from the initial idea to the finished solution. The company is an independent service provider for manufacturers of home energy management systems (HEMS) and other IoT applications in the energy sector. It offers software development and testing from a single source. EnQS tests the applications directly with the devices in the EnQS Testlab to ensure that everything works under real-world conditions.
Software development
EnQS develops software that ensures devices such as solar systems, battery storage units, heat pumps, and wall boxes communicate smoothly with each other and are integrated into a common energy management system. To this end, EnQS builds interfaces between devices, develops applications for intelligent control, and integrates common communication standards such as EEBUS. As an expert in the field of smart metering, EnQS is also involved in current projects dealing with the interaction between energy management systems and smart metering systems.
Testing
A particular advantage is that customers can send their devices directly to EnQS, where they are connected and tested under real-life conditions. EnQS tests complete energy management systems, encompassing devices, control systems, and applications. The aim is to ensure that everything works together reliably. This also includes tests to check the compatibility of devices from different manufacturers and efficiency tests.
Technology transfer with an impact
EnQS is a prime example of successful technology transfer:
What we developed and tested at the FZI Living Lab smartEnergy back then – software architectures, interfaces, and algorithms – is now found in devices and energy systems. At EnQS, we also embody the typical FZI spirit: pragmatic, solution-oriented, and always focused on the application.
The success story of EnQS demonstrates how practical research can be applied to the economy and make a tangible contribution to the energy transition. This makes the FZI an essential partner in the Karlsruhe innovation ecosystem.
