C2CBridge is exploring a new type of public transportation service that utilizes automated and connected driving to facilitate the transition between urban and rural areas.
C2CBridge investigates a novel, individualized public transport service as an attractive and sustainable alternative to private cars for mobility between urban and rural areas. At the core of the concept are small, electrically powered and automated on-demand vehicles that transport passengers flexibly and, wherever possible, directly to their destination. In urban areas, several vehicles can electronically form platoons in order to use road space and energy more efficiently. In addition, mobility hubs connect the new service with existing public transport systems. Technical developments are closely linked with mobility planning, user requirements and acceptance research, and are tested and evaluated using both virtual and physical demonstrators.
In Phase 1, FZI develops the key foundations for the automation of the C2CBridge vehicles. This includes defining requirements for the highly automated and cooperative driving functions, designing the sensor setup, considering relevant E/E interfaces, and developing concepts for V2X communication. The main focus is on the development and investigation of environment perception, local and vehicle-spanning aggregated environment models, cooperative motion and trajectory planning, as well as trajectory control for both individual and platoon driving. The automation functions are initially designed, simulated and validated primarily in virtual environments.
