Thomas Meyer studied history with a focus on the history of technology, philosophy and medieval studies at the University of Karlsruhe (TH), today's Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg. He completed his dissertation on the post-war development of Daimler-Benz AG in 2009.
From 2008 to 2018 he worked at the Institute of Vehicle System Technology (FAST) at KIT, since 2012 as head of the mobility concepts research group and member of the institute management. From 2009 to 2018, Thomas Meyer was also managing director of the KIT Mobility Systems Center. In the course of this activity, he was involved in the conception and implementation of large collaborative projects such as the Leading-Edge Cluster for Electric Mobility South-West (2010-2017) or Test Area Autonomous Driving Baden-Württemberg (since 2016). From 2010 to 2018 he was a member of the core team in the Cluster Electric Mobility South-West at Innovation Agency for New Mobility and Automotive and has been involved in several pillars of the Strategic Dialogue for the Automotive Sector in Baden-Württemberg since 2017. Thomas Meyer has a teaching assignment at the Institute of Technology Futures at KIT since 2013 and is an alumnus of the Helmholtz Leadership Academy.
Since May 2018, Thomas Meyer has headed the FZI's Embedded Systems and Sensor Technologies (ESS) research area, since 2023 he has headed the Innovation – Strategy – Transfer (IST) area together with Ada Streb.
