Open Source Framework ROS

Manufacturer-independent and cutting-edge

Open for Innovation
in Robotics

ROS (Robot Operating System) is an open-source, manufacturer-independent framework specifically designed for robots. It consists of a series of software packages, libraries, and tools that facilitate the development of robot applications, particularly by encapsulating frequently used functionalities for reuse.
Whether customized or specially developed ROS drivers, specific software such as planning and control components, or complete applications, we offer you our extensive expertise in the widely used open source framework “Robot Operating System” (ROS and ROS 2) so that your developments can benefit from and contribute to the ecosystem in the best possible way.

We Love ROS: our engagement and know-how

Know-how for manufacturers and community

The FZI has over four decades of experience in robotics research. For instance, through its long-standing collaboration with Universal Robots (UR), the FZI developed the ROS driver for UR robot arms, enhancing the robots’ reliability and robustness. The FZI also maintains a large number of packages, including those for SICK safety laser scanners, and actively contributes to the development of additional packages. With direct support from the manufacturers, the FZI can develop high-quality software and make it available to the community, as well as develop innovative, application-oriented features.

Proprietary open source frameworks

With its proprietary packages, the FZI makes the latest research available to the community. VDB_mapping, developed over many years, enables efficient 3D mapping. The behavior tree implementation ros_bt_py makes it possible to successfully implement even challenging and novel applications in the shortest possible time. Developments such as Cartesian controllers for the external Cartesian force control of industrial robots or robot_folders as aids for the rapid implementation of new developments also contribute to the rapid realization of applications.

Software for working with Artificial Intelligence

The FZI Living Lab Service Robotics constantly incorporates the latest approaches from the fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Vision, and Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) into concrete applications. The latest state-of-the-art is constantly being expanded with new approaches, such as Reinforcement Learning (RL) using Isaac Gym or MuJoCo. To this end, hardware such as a GPU cluster for AI training is also being continuously expanded.
