ALLIANZ

Digital platform for dementia prevention helps address the lack of exercise

Start: 10.2024

End: 09.2025

Patients with dementia can address the risk factor of physical inactivity through targeted treatment. To slow down the disease’s progress, it is essential to encourage those affected to change their lifestyle. The ALLIANZ project is investigating whether a digital platform offers advantages over an analog approach to prevention, to help dementia patients achieve their therapy goals more effectively.

Dementia is one of the most significant health challenges posed by demographic change. Many affected individuals receive appropriate prevention or therapy only at a late stage. Caregivers can utilize the digital platform for dementia prevention developed within the ALLIANZ project through a web application to create a personalized prevention plan. Patients, in turn, have access to the platform via a smartphone app, can view the common goals, and can be motivated in a way tailored to their target group through graphic models and other digital incentives. This could allow patients to receive a specialized prevention plan more quickly. The project provides insights into digital motivation, user guidance, and personalization in a medical context. At the same time, it expands research in the field of digital health interventions with empirically based results and innovative technical solutions. Additionally, it alleviates the burden on the healthcare system through more efficient care processes. The project’s results can serve as the basis for new digital health products and services. This opens up new market potential for companies in the fields of medical technology, digital health, and prevention. At the same time, the scalable solution contributes to cost reduction in healthcare and opens up opportunities for innovative business models in personalized healthcare. The ALLIANZ project uses methods of user-centered development, digital intervention design, and prototypical implementation in agile development cycles. The digital and analog approaches are compared using qualitative and quantitative evaluation methods.

Role of the FZI

The FZI is responsible for the development and prototypical implementation of the digital platform in the ALLIANZ project. This includes, in particular, the design and implementation of the web application for medical professionals and the smartphone app for patients. Additionally, the FZI is responsible for the technical integration of the coaching logic, developing incentive mechanisms, and implementing the platform in compliance with data protection regulations. In addition, FZI is contributing its expertise in user research to ensure that the systems are designed to meet user needs as closely as possible.
