Application Field

Mobility, Transport and Logistics

Foundations of efficient and sustainable mobility systems of tomorrow

The mobility sector has always been a leading economic driver in Baden-Württemberg and entire Germany. Since its early days, the FZI has supported this industry with practical ICT solutions and technologies for the mobility of tomorrow and has engaged in transfer activities with SMEs, larger companies, the research community, and policy at the state and federal level. The main focus of these activities lies in novel mobility concepts and applications emphasizing public transportation of passengers and goods.

For the mobility of tomorrow, scientists at the FZI develop automated and connected mobility systems – from autonomous vehicles and novel concepts for public transit to AI-supported methods for managing people’s individual mobility requirements.

To this end, scientists advance innovative mobility solutions for humans and transported goods – from the initial concept through system design and algorithm development to testing and verification – and work on designing supportive infrastructure systems while considering legal viewpoints.

The safety and robustness of the developed solutions are ensured via virtual, semi-virtual, and real-world testing. The ultimate goal is to make mobility safe, sustainable, and comfortable.

In logistics, the FZI develops innovative planning and optimization methods around route and area planning.

New mobility systems, digital platforms, and all facets of modern mobility
must be flexibly interlinked using ICT-based network concepts. Sensor technologies, IoT, and Big Data are increasingly used in fleet management, focusing on predictive rather than preventive maintenance.

The increasing complexity of these interlinked systems can be addressed using robust methods for real-time monitoring, early detection of faults and reduced downtime, and flexible maintenance planning.

The FZI is providing the foundations for an efficient and sustainable mobility system of tomorrow, in which information and communication technologies (ICT) will gain even
greater importance.
