RegioOnkoNet
Strengthening regional oncology care through optimized networking with general practitioners and patient empowerment
Start: 10/2025
End: 09/2030

At the core of RegioOnkoNet is the development of a decentralized, highly secure digital communication network and a competence platform. This communication system directly connects oncologists, general practitioners, and patients.
Modern diagnostics and therapies for the care of cancer patients in rural areas are a central challenge for the healthcare system. Considering the steadily increasing number of cancer patients, local care by general practitioners will become significantly more important in the coming years. Until now, there have been hardly any local structures for oncology care, and networking with primary care providers offers considerable potential for improvement. This is where the RegioOnkoNet collaborative project comes in. The common goal of the project partners is to improve the care of cancer patients directly on site in the Karlsruhe–Freiburg model region through digital solutions. This spares patients long travel distances and waiting times for appointments. Specialty practices and hospitals in urban centers can be relieved by the reduction of referrals of cancer patients.
Role of the FZI
In the project, FZI is responsible for the technical implementation as well as the development of the decentralized, highly secure digital communication network and competence platform.
