C2CBridge is exploring a new type of public transportation service that utilizes automated and connected driving to facilitate the transition between urban and rural areas.
C2CBridge investigates a novel, individualized public transport service as an attractive and sustainable alternative to private cars for mobility between urban and rural areas. At the core of the concept are small, electrically powered and automated on-demand vehicles that transport passengers flexibly and, wherever possible, directly to their destination. In urban areas, several vehicles can electronically form platoons in order to use road space and energy more efficiently. In addition, mobility hubs connect the new service with existing public transport systems. Technical developments are closely linked with mobility planning, user requirements and acceptance research, and are tested and evaluated using both virtual and physical demonstrators.
Role of the FZI
In Phase 2, FZI is responsible for the technical implementation of the vehicle automation in the physical test vehicles. FZI develops and integrates the complete automation chain, ranging from sensors and sensor fusion to localization, environment modelling, motion planning, trajectory control and vehicle actuation. A particular research focus is cooperative driving in platoons. In this context, FZI implements the functions required for joining, driving in and dissolving platoons, the shared environment perception of multiple vehicles, the necessary V2X communication, and adapted safety functions.
In addition, FZI is responsible for major parts of the system integration, including sensor and computing hardware integration, calibration, vehicle control software, software infrastructure, as well as testing and validation of the automated driving functions in both individual and platoon operation. FZI also develops methods for demand-oriented repositioning of the on-demand vehicles in order to ensure high vehicle availability and short waiting times, particularly in rural areas.
