SWIM- Sustainable Water and Integrated Management of Fish Migration and their Habitats in the Danube River Basin and NW Black Sea
A Mission Ocean Project
Start: 09/2025
End: 08/2029

SWIM is part of the EU initiative ‘Restore Our Ocean and Waters’; the project aims to protect and, in the long term, restore the habitats of migratory fish species in the Danube basin and the north-western Black Sea region.
At seven pilot sites in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Romania and Ukraine, SWIM is implementing a total of 13 measures to establish new standards for water body health. The insights gained are intended to serve as a model for future environmental restoration projects in Europe, which will not only promote environmental protection but also contribute to healthier living environments for people. In this way, the aim is to create a future with thriving ecosystems and communities worth living in.
In order to gather as many ideas and innovations as possible and ultimately put them into practice, SWIM brings together various transnational partners, ranging from government representatives and NGOs to researchers and local communities. The partners pool their expertise to connect stakeholders, support sustainability, identify opportunities and develop recommendations.
Role of the FZI
The FZI is supporting the SWIM project by developing an interactive 3D environment which, as a digital twin of the pilot sites, is intended to assist with the analysis of the water bodies.
At the same time, the FZI is helping to establish the SWIM Alliance, thereby ensuring the sustainability of the project’s results beyond the project’s duration and strengthening the exchange between research and practice.
