Tobias Schürmann studied Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), specializing in automation and information. His studies focused on control engineering, robotics, and optimization. He wrote his master’s thesis, titled “Design of an Optimal Control Strategy for a Dynamic Connection of Lithium-Ion Energy Storage Devices,” at the Institute of Control Systems (IRS).
He has been a research associate since December 2015 and, since July 2016, deputy department head in the research division “Embedded Systems and Sensors Engineering” (ESS) at FZI. For his doctoral dissertation, supervised by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sören Hohmann, he focused on developing flexible power management approaches for the automobile of the future. The approaches he developed enable effective coordination of power flows within the vehicle as well as the seamless integration of new electrical and electronic components into existing vehicles.
Since September 2024, he has been Head of Department in the research division ESS. His department is advised by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Eric Sax and works on topics in the field of systems engineering with a focus on data and artificial intelligence. These topics complement the work of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Eric Sax’s group at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology – Institute for Information Processing Technology (ITIV).
