Safety, Security and Resilience

Technology you can trust

Shaping digitalization
safely

We research cybersecurity, safety, and legal frameworks to ensure the secure, responsible, and practical use of new technologies. Our research focuses on AI security and secure embedded systems. Together with partners from industry, business, and government, we combine technical expertise with regulatory know-how. This enables us to create solutions that are technically robust, legally sound, and ethically sound.

Safety at all levels

Sicherheit-von-KI

Security of AI

We are researching how AI systems can be protected against manipulation, attacks on training data, prompt injection, and unintended information leaks throughout their entire lifecycle. In this way, we are laying the groundwork for trustworthy, explainable, and auditable AI applications in safety-critical areas.

Sicherheit-durch-KI

Security through AI

We conduct research on AI-powered methods that detect vulnerabilities more quickly, identify attacks at an early stage, and automate security analyses at scale. To this end, we develop approaches for intelligent anomaly detection, AI-powered fuzzing, and automated penetration testing that help companies proactively secure their systems.

Schutz-vor-KI

Protection against AI-related risks

We are investigating the risks posed by new, powerful AI models such as Claude Mythos, particularly regarding the discovery, chaining, and exploitation of zero-day vulnerabilities. Our research also covers the risks posed by deepfakes, hyper-personalized phishing, automated attack chains, and adaptive malware. We explore how the private sector, government, and critical infrastructure can effectively protect themselves against these threats.

Strategically well connected

As an active partner of the KASTEL Security Research Labs, we help shape one of the world’s leading cybersecurity research networks. Through numerous collaborative projects and bilateral partnerships, we work with industry and application partners to develop sustainable solutions. In doing so, we benefit from the close integration of our expertise in the application fields of energy, manufacturing, mobility, transportation, and logistics with our interdisciplinary research focus on “Security and Resilience.”

Selected areas of focus in our research

IoT security

Our IT security experts analyze IoT products for potential vulnerabilities. Drawing on the latest research, we develop customized solutions to help companies secure their products.

Post-quantum
cryptography

At the FZI, we are conducting early-stage research into new cryptographic methods that can withstand future threats posed by quantum computers. We advise companies on the transition to post-quantum-secure methods.

Legal aspects of
new technologies

Our experts in data protection, IT security, and AI law support innovation projects from the very beginning and provide recommendations for the legally compliant use of new technologies.

Our research for your safety

Security and trust are the cornerstones of successful digitalization. Whether it is low-threshold support for cybersecurity incidents, legally compliant AI applications, or the protection of modern hardware architectures, we develop market-ready solutions that combine technological innovation and legal certainty.

Our projects and events show that security does not begin with responding to incidents, but rather with designing trustworthy technologies through transparent AI working environments, legally compliant data processing, or secure embedded systems. We build trust in digital technologies with our partners from business, science, and society.

With the "Prüflabor Cybersicherheit", a cybersecurity testing laboratory, the FZI offers an outstanding laboratory environment for security analyses at the hardware and software level for IoT products.

Why the FZI as research partner?

The FZI Research Center for Information Technology is the ideal research partner for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups looking to implement new technologies securely and in accordance with the law. Our interdisciplinary teams of IT law, cryptography, hardware, and software security experts provide targeted support in developing secure, innovative products and services. We focus on practical security research and in-depth knowledge of key areas such as mobility, healthcare, and energy. As an independent research institute, the FZI combines technological and legal expertise. This approach is becoming increasingly important due to growing regulatory requirements and complex threat scenarios. We don’t consider security in isolation, but holistically — from technology and application to legal protection. We are laying the foundations for trustworthy and sustainable digitalization with our partners.
