Space missions are complex and expensive endeavors, which are always associated with considerable risks. Due to the harsh environmental conditions and the highly complex robotic systems, safe and conservative decisions are made by a ground station to minimize risk. However, this prevents the robotic systems from reaching their full potential.
In the previous intelliRISK project, a system was developed to let the robot assess the risks on-site and thus create comprehensive self- and environmental awareness. Based on this, the robot has learned to adapt its behavior in a risk-aware manner. The effort for mission control can thus be significantly reduced. With intelliRISK 2, the results from intelliRISK will be continued and the self- and environmental awareness of robots expanded. By means of active learning strategies and retrospectives on activities carried out, the robot should be able to learn from its actions and thereby continuously improve itself.
In this research focus, the FZI concentrates on practical research into the key technology of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Innovative AI solutions are developed and transferred to application areas such as mobility, robotics, healthcare technology, logistics, production, and supply and disposal on behalf of our partners and customers.
