AMAZING
Automated Modeling, Analysis, and State Estimation Using Intelligent Grid Algorithms and Graph-Based Methods
Start: 10/2024
End: 09/2027

The energy transition poses major challenges for electricity grid operators, particularly due to the large-scale integration of photovoltaic systems, battery storage, heat pumps, and charging infrastructure into electricity distribution networks. Digital twins of power grids can help address these challenges.
In the project AMAZING, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE), FZI is researching AI-based methods that highly automate the derivation and calibration of digital twins of power grids from various data sources provided by grid operators. The practical value of the generated digital twins is being evaluated through several energy-sector use cases and implemented by the five electricity grid operators participating in the project. This ensures the practical relevance of the project results for future digitalized grid operation. At the same time, the research outcomes can be demonstrated in real-world settings and used as a blueprint for widespread adoption.
Role of the FZI
The FZI’s primary contribution to the research project lies in the development and testing of robust, modular, and scalable IT components that support the efficient and data-driven operation of electrical distribution grids. These components serve as an interface, providing distribution system operators (DSOs) with easy access to complex algorithms, such as grid state estimation, as well as external information sources, including meteorological data.

Research focus
Sustainable Engineering and Energy

This research focus includes the research and design of sustainable IT innovations in the cross-sectional areas of energy, mobility, production, water management, and logistics. This involves developing systems that promote the ecologically, socially, and economically sustainable use of resources, and providing strategic consultancy services to companies, particularly SMEs, on their path to greater sustainability.
