The KARL Competence Center shapes the future of work by researching robust methods and processes for AI adoption. To translate theory into practice, the project tests these approaches in concrete use cases, enabling companies to safely enter hybrid work environments.

The application of artificial intelligence (AI) will have far-reaching implications for the work organisation and work processes of many employees. The aim of the KARL Competence Centre – Artificial Intelligence for Work and Learning in the Karlsruhe Region is to systematically design human-centred, transparent AI-supported work and learning systems and to demonstrate them in specific applications scenarios. The tools, methods and best practices developed in KARL are intended to enable companies to implement attractive AI-supported working environments. The focus is on hybrid systems that combine the advantages of human and artificial intelligence.

Role of the FZI

In addition to the overall coordination of the design areas, FZI is specifically concerned with the process-oriented introduction of AI into work processes and the ethical, legal and social design of AI-supported work systems.
The FZI develops guidelines to help companies implement legally compliant solutions (liability, data protection, labour and copyright law) and to highlight potential conflicts with the legal framework. These findings are used to further develop agile development processes. Furthermore, the FZI is contributing to a mobility-related use case in KARL: systematic observation and surveys will be used to examine the mental strain and satisfaction of safety drivers in shuttle operations.

In this research focus, the FZI concentrates on practical research into the key technology of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
