Research Topics at the FZI Living Lab Industrial Intelligence

  • Model-based Control: We develop precise physical models to predict the behaviour of systems. Through innovative optimisation procedures, we can design controllers to achieve the desired goal quickly and efficiently. Through human behaviour models and shared control approaches, we are also able to optimally integrate the operator into the process.
  • Secure Industrial Systems: We offer solutions for secure systems in both the design and operational phases. Security analyses must already be taken into account in the design phase. For this purpose, we research methods and tools for a model-based security-by-design development process. Monitoring systems in operation, such as intrusion detection systems, provide data about attacks and anomalies. We research on continuous development processes that take field data into account already in the design phase.
  • Industrial Internet of Things: We have many years of expertise in the implementation of data-driven applications in the industrial IoT environment - from machine connectivity (e.g. OPC-UA, MQTT, PLC) to data analysis.
  • Industrial AI: Artificial intelligence is playing an increasingly important role in industrial applications. Under the keyword "Human-Centric Industrial AI", we develop applications that improve the continuous exchange between AI systems and professional users, make results from AI models explainable and generate reliable predictions with just a few training data.
  • Edge & Fog Computing: In an interdisciplinary team, we develop solutions in the field of edge and fog computing in order to process algorithms wherever they make sense in terms of performance, resilience or data protection reasons - as close to the machine as possible or centrally in the cloud. In doing so, we research topics such as event-driven computing and container management in highly scalable infrastructures.
  • Digital Twin: We conduct application-oriented research in the context of digital twins in the production for the application fields of product lifecycle management, process simulation & optimisation and visualisation in 3D and virtual reality (VR).
  • Computational linguistic assistance systems: In the context of requirement engineering, we research on intelligent assistance tools for the determination and tracking of requirements.
  • Furthermore, we cooperate with other FZI laboratories such as the FZI Living Lab Service Robotics or the FZI Living Lab smartEnergy.
