Development in constant dialogue with society

Focus on current research topics

The FZI develops innovations for the benefit of society in collaboration with companies and public institutions of all sizes. We collaborate with our partners on pioneering research projects, cutting across industries and combining expertise with a methodological approach. Together, we create tailor-made, application-oriented innovations that strengthen the economy and society in international competition.
Each year, the FZI identifies key research focuses to guide its strategic activities and project initiatives.

Applied Artificial Intelligence

AI is one of the key technologies of the future. At the FZI, we develop practical AI methods and transfer our research directly to companies and society. Ethical and legal concerns are on our agenda right from the start. The result is trustworthy AI that delivers secure, accountable, and practical benefits.

Mobility and Logistics

For connected, safe, and sustainable mobility: The synergy of research, technology, and application results in intelligent systems for mobility and logistics – from automated vehicles and AI-supported traffic control to digital twins. In real-world laboratories, we develop suitable concepts, test solutions, and refine them further.

Energy and Sustainability

Sustainability counts: We develop IT innovations and processes in the fields of energy, climate protection, mobility, and production for an ecologically, socially, and economically responsible use of resources. With future-proof business models, consulting services, and feasibility studies, we accompany companies on their path to sustainability.

Safety, Security and Resilience

Digitalization and networking are key drivers of innovative solutions. New technologies also bring new challenges for cybersecurity, data protection, and legal frameworks. Given this, we are researching methods and strategies for using digital technologies securely and in compliance with the law to promote greater trust in digital applications.

Digital Society

Digital technologies influence democratic processes. At the FZI, we are researching how information technology can strengthen a resilient, fair, and open democracy – for example, through AI-supported analysis of disinformation, the development of digital participation platforms, or data-based evaluation methods.

Robotics

With a focus on intelligent mobile systems and walking robots, autonomous functions are being developed for space travel, safety-critical and hostile environments, and industrial production.
